Bio

Phillip Matty is a composer whose work explores the intersection of sound, structure, and narrative. Drawing on influences from both music and mathematics, his compositions engage with conventional notation, graphic scores, and interdisciplinary collaboration. His recent works span chamber music, opera, and theatre, reflecting an interest in the tension between abstraction and form.

Currently pursuing an MPhil in Composition at the University of Cambridge under Richard Causton, Phillip previously studied at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where he earned an MMus with distinction under the guidance of Andrew Hamilton and Andrew Toovey. He has also worked with Seán Clancy and Ed Bennett and attended masterclasses with Bee Tuan Koh, Richard Ayres, and Geoff Hannan. Before focusing on composition, he completed an MMath at the University of York, where he was deeply involved in the musical community.

His chamber opera Willow was selected for CUOS Shorts 2025, and his choral work A Baby Sleeps won the 2024 Clare College Carol Composition Competition. He also received the 2025 Clare College Composition Competition for orchestral writing. Other projects include composing for theatre and collaborative work with artists such as Catherine Mole for the CODA Festival. In 2023, he participated in CAMPFR’s Composing for Stage course, led by Philip Venables.

Phillip’s music is driven by an interest in texture, distortion, and the ways in which sound can challenge perception. His work has been recognised through performances and awards, and he continues to develop projects that blur the boundaries between disciplines.
